Hong Kong museums are categorised into:
DiscountsMost museums offer individual and group passes valid for six months or a full year. There are discounts for large groups, children, students and retired citizens. Yearly and half-yearly passes also allow discounts in museum shops and cafés as well as on special activities organised by the museums. Application forms are available from any of the participating museums.
The following museums are free of charge on Wednesdays and all can be visited with a Museum Pass, valid for one week, sold at the Tourist Board Visitor Information and Services Centres and participating museums:
Principal MuseumsHong Kong Heritage MuseumThe museum hosts exhibitions of the history, art and culture of Hong Kong including a section for children, the Children's Discovery Gallery. The Gallery contains eight learning playzones that allow children to experience nature and archaeology. An exhibition, "Hong Kong Toy Story", illustrates the development of local toys. Guided tours are available.
Hong Kong Space MuseumPlanetarium with two exhibition sections located in an egg-shape dome comprising the Space Theatre, the Hall of Space Science, Hall of Astronomy, the Lecture Hall, workshops, offices and gift shops. Special exhibitions are displayed throughout the year with OMNIMAX shows for children.
Hong Kong Museum of ArtOne of the larger museums housing ancient Chinese art from the Han to the Ming and Qing dynasties, international works and calligraphy. There are currently over 14,000 art objects on display. The museum provides free art activities for visitors, art workshops for children and guided tours.
Museum of Coastal DefenceSituated in the 100-year-old Lei Yue Mun Fort, the museum features the history of coastal defence in Hong Kong from the period of Ming and Qing dynasties to the present.
Hong Kong Science MuseumThe majority of the 500 exhibits in the museum are interactive and cover science and technology including robotics, transportation and virtual reality. There are several programmes for children: "Kid's Lab", "Little Scientist Exploration" and "Education Activities of Soaring Dinosaurs".
Dr Sun Yat-sen MuseumExhibits dedicated to Dr Sun Yat-sen's life achievements as China's revolutionary pioneer. Workshops for adults and children, films and lectures available periodically.
