Hong Kong is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia with millions of visitors per year. While the city has a huge range of accommodation from luxury hotels to guesthouses and youth hostels, there is no official star rating system.

Hotels

Most of the major international hotel chains are present in Hong Kong, including some of the most expensive and best-known hotels in the world. Some belong to the Hong Kong Hotels Association (HKHA). With 95 member hotels, the association represents the industry's issues and provides services for visitors including reservations and information on its list of hotels.

See The AngloFILE for listings of:

Budget Accommodation

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) administers the Quality Tourism Services Visitor Accommodation Scheme which assists visitors with finding suitable accommodation at a budget price. This accommodation must be up to the standards set by HKTB.

Guesthouses

Accommodation in guesthouses is favoured by budget travellers. The guesthouses are situated mostly in mansion blocks in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. It is recommended to ask to see the room before paying for it.

Youth Hostels

There are seven hostels managed by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association (HKYHA) and part of the International Youth Hostel Federation. These hostels are generally located in the New Territories and outlying islands, but there are two close to the airport and one on Hong Kong Island. The YMCA and YWCA hostels tend to provide rooms and service at a higher rate.

Membership of the International Youth Hostel Federation (available from national youth hostelling organisation) or a "Welcome Stamp" (available from a Hong Kong hostel) is needed to stay in a Hong Kong Youth Hostel. Rooms can be booked via the head office of the Youth Hostels Association.

Camping

There are many designated camp sites at country parks throughout Hong Kong. A permit for camping in the designated areas is not required. During dry months, it is advisable to check with the park's authority to see whether water is available at the camp sites.

The Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) has a list of all the campsites with their facilities, access and local highlights.

Disabled Travellers

The Hong Kong Council for Social Services (HKCSS) has a guide for disabled travellers with information on hotel facilities and accessibility. Information is also availabke from the HKTB.
