Golf is popular in Hong Kong with courses in open areas on Hong Kong Island and the mainland. The prestigious Hong Kong Golf Club hosts tournaments which attract world class players.

Golfing Associations & Organisations

The Hong Kong Golf Association governs the activities of the amateur golf world in Hong Kong, as well as promoting training and events for professionals. The Association's website has useful information on where to play, driving ranges, the handicap system and golf societies.

Playing Golf in Hong Kong

It is not necessary to have a doctor' certificate to play golf in Hong Kong, although medical insurance for sports is advised.

The handicap system

Players must have a handicap to play in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Golfing Association follows the handicap system set by the United States Golfing Association, known as the USGA Handicap Index. The maximum handicap index is 36.4 for men and 40.4 for women.

Handicaps from other countries are valid, although it is recommended that a local handicap is obtained for any competitive play in Hong Kong. Members of a golf society can get a handicap certificate through the society; golfers who are not members can join the Hong Kong Mens/Ladies Golf Society. New players will need to have five acceptable scorecards to get a handicap certificate.

Golf Clubs & Courses in Hong Kong

The major private courses in Hong Kong are:

• The Hong Kong Golf Club
  The club has three 18-hole courses at Fanling in the New Territories, plus one 9-hole course at Deepwater Bay in the south of Hong Kong Island. There are also other leisure facilities, accommodation and restaurants. Visitors are welcomed on weekdays, either with or without members, depending on the course

• The Discovery Bay Golf Club, Lantau Island
  A total of 27 holes, nine holes on each of the Diamond, Ruby and Jade courses. The Diamond and Ruby courses may be combined to create an 18-hole course which is available for visitors to play. Visitors are allowed to play on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays

• The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club, Kowloon
  A two by nine-hole course which is part of a country club in Sai Kung. Limited weekday playing time for visitors

  A strictly members-only club in the south east of Hong Kong Island

The only public course is:

• Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau
  Based at Sai Kung, the club has two 18-hole courses. It is open to the public and play can be booked seven days in advance

Golf Societies

Several companies and nationality groups run clubs and societies for their golfing members. The American Women's Association welcomes women from around the world to its sports club which offers golf play and lessons.
